So many of our customers love Spring — for many, it’s their favorite season. Spring is a time of rebirth, renewal, and rejuvenation. One of the greatest things to see in spring is a beautiful assortment of flowers. You can find this joy at home by planting spring flower bulbs. These are bulbs that bloom in early spring while other plants are still quiet and developing.

There are many spring flowering bulbs, but some of the most popular are:

  • Crocus
  • Tulip
  • Narcissus
  • Hyacinth

These spring blooming bulbs should be planted before the ground freezes, preferably in late September or early October. So make note on your calendars for later this year! This fall planting practice enables them to develop a strong root system before the first frost hits the northeast.

Where should you plant them? Spring flower bulbs should be planted in an area that drains well. Bulbs will rot if left in standing water and they must also receive adequate sunshine — count on at least six hours per day for healthy bulbs. The soil doesn’t necessarily need any special treatment, but the soil should be loose and workable. If you are working a new area, go ahead and add some compost or peat moss.

When it comes time to dig the hole for your bulbs, follow the package directions, depending on the type of bulb. Most bulbs will require a depth of about six to eight inches, but loosen the soil for an additional four inches. Place the bulb in the ground with the pointy end facing up. Then, pack the dirt firmly and water them thoroughly.

Spring flower bulbs require little care. Simply water them occasionally, and add a mulch cover when cold weather gets closer. With a little water and sunshine, your early spring will be filled with beautiful, fragrant blooms.
