Fall Yard Cleanup Built Around Plant and Soil Health

Grasshopper Gardens manages the entire fall cleanup process with the health of your landscape in mind. Our team brings decades of hands-on experience to the care your lawn needs before the change in seasons. Crews move through every maintained lawn and landscaped area with commercial blowers and vacuums, collecting fallen leaves, pine needles, and sticks before they mat down, trap moisture, and invite disease. Every pile is hauled away, leaving your property tidy heading into winter. When the snow finally melts, a property cleaned up in fall greens up faster and takes far less work to get ready for the new season.

Our yard was was completely damaged from a drainage install we had done and we have clay soil which is the absolute worse to deal with. We literally needed a whole new lawn installed from front to back. Grasshopper Gardens was an absolute pleasure to work with from start to finish. Whether I was speaking to someone from the office or the two men who came and did all the hard work, everyone was so professional and courteous. They did such an amazing job leveling out our yard (which was definitely not easy, even breaking up clumps of clay by hand) laying down the top soil, grading and then hydro seeding the whole thing. They came on time, worked hard the whole time they were here, respected my property and banged out the whole job in one day. I am so happy we chose them and will definitely continue to be a customer for years to come.

They all have an artistic eye and our property, which is both landscaped by and maintained by Grasshopper, looks stunning. The beautiful sunset terraces we had built last year are phenomenal!”

What We Clean Up, and What We Leave for Local Wildlife

A good yard cleanup doesn’t mean scraping every inch of your property bare, and not every fallen leaf needs to be hauled away. Fall is the perfect time to decide what stays and what goes. Thick mats of dead leaves on the lawn need to come off, and diseased plants and invasive species should always be removed completely. But a layer of leaf litter under trees and shrubs shelters beneficial insects through the cold winter months. Bumblebee queens overwinter just beneath the leaves, native bees nest in hollow stems, and swallowtail butterflies spend the winter in chrysalises attached to dead stalks. Standing ornamental grasses add movement to the winter landscape, and a small brush pile tucked into a designated area gives birds and pollinators real wildlife habitat. Tell us how tidy you want your landscape, and we’ll strike the balance between a clean look and one that supports local wildlife all winter long.

FAQs

The ideal window falls after most fall leaves have dropped but before the first lasting snow, typically late October into November in the Capital Region. Scheduling early keeps your spot on the calendar, and we time the visit around your property’s trees.

Thick, wet mats of dead leaves smother grass and invite disease, so those need to come off the lawn. A light scattering can be mulch-mowed back into the turf, where it breaks down and returns organic matter to the soil. In planting beds, a modest layer of leaf litter actually benefits soil and overwintering pollinators.

Healthy leaves and trimmings are composted or reused rather than sent to a landfill in plastic bags. Diseased plants are hauled away and disposed of separately. Some municipalities offer curbside leaf pickup through their streets division, but our crews handle removal completely so you never have to bag, drag, or schedule anything.

Yes. Many customers pair their cleanup with separate fall services such as cutting back perennial plants, lifting tender bulbs before the ground freezes, aerating the lawn, or prepping garden beds with soil amendments and a cover crop ahead of the colder months. Tell us what your property needs and we’ll build the visit around it.

Leaves and debris left out all winter mat down under the snow, smother the grass, and give fungi and pests a place to overwinter. Clearing everything in fall protects your lawn while it’s dormant, and it means far less work and a faster green-up when your yard wakes up next spring.
