The Glens Falls Tree Commission is a city advisory board appointed by the mayor with the goal of restoring, maintaining, and cultivating the city’s foliage. As part of the 2023 initiative, the Tree Commission set out to find a company to plant trees within the city of Glens Falls and Grasshopper Gardens is proud to be a part of this initiative. For over 20 years, our Grasshopper Gardens team has been committed to providing the best service to our clients and community as a whole. As a locally owned, family run business, we know the importance of supporting our neighbors and friends, so when the chance to enrich the lives of our wonderful local community came knocking, we eagerly opened the door.
Glens Falls has always been a vibrant hub teeming with life and opportunities for growth, and The Tree Project aims to further enrich this area. Our dedicated Tree Committee has carefully handpicked a variety of trees for this project, including Skyline Honeylocusts, Valley Forge American Elms, and Autumn Blaze Freemire Maples, among others. With our expansive knowledge, we chose beautiful trees that are sure to thrive in the climate of Upstate New York and stand tall for decades to come.
The value of trees in urban and small-town settings cannot be understated. Numerous studies conducted nationwide, including one by the U.S. Forest Service, highlight the economic and safety advantages that trees bring to towns and their residents.
Tree-lined streets have been proven to reduce traffic speeds by 3 to 15 miles per hour in certain cases, and mature trees can even act as natural barriers, safeguarding pedestrians. To top it off, trees have the magical ability to enhance the “walk appeal” of streets, encouraging more people to stroll around. This not only strengthens community bonds but also promotes physical well-being by encouraging more outdoor exercise. Speaking of health, trees also contribute to better mental health by reducing psychological distress, as indicated by lower stress levels, blood pressure, and cortisol levels. Trees also aid in stormwater management, reducing the risk of flooding and property damage, creating a safer environment for all.
The economic benefits of trees are equally significant. Communities with abundant greenery tend to see a boost in local business activity, with up to a 20% increase in foot traffic. The shade provided by trees has a cooling effect, reducing temperatures on roads and homes and cutting energy bills by 15-35%. This shade also extends the life of asphalt, saving costs in maintaining roadways. Homes and businesses surrounded by trees typically experience a 5-10% increase in property value. This uptick in value can lead to a more positive outlook for the city’s finances, potentially allowing for improved budgets.
Beyond their many benefits to communities and human well-being, trees also play a crucial role in sustaining the environment and supporting wildlife. Trees act as nature’s lungs, absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen, helping mitigate the effects of climate change. They provide habitat and shelter for countless species of birds, insects, and mammals, promoting biodiversity in our urban and natural landscapes. From providing nesting sites to serving as a source of food, trees are essential for the survival of many wildlife species. Protecting and nurturing our urban forests not only beautifies our surroundings but also contributes to the larger ecological balance, ensuring a healthier planet for current and future generations. So, as we celebrate the Tree Project’s positive impact on our community, let us also appreciate the vital role these trees play in sustaining our environment and the diverse wildlife that calls it home.
Trees play a crucial role in creating healthy, happy, and thriving communities. The City of Glens Falls is committed to investing in our future, and we are thrilled to be a part of this effort to enhance our surrounding neighborhoods. Trees are our passion, and we are excited to share this with you all. The City of Glens Falls and our Grasshopper Gardens team hope that in the years to come, you will enjoy the delightful tree-lined streetscape we are creating!
